1. SHUTDOWN DAYS AWAY

It seems increasingly unlikely that Congress can get its act together in time to avoid a government shutdown this Saturday. On the one hand, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is struggling to corral hard-right Republicans who want to slash spending, and on the other, a bipartisan effort in the Senate is running into a roadblock over additional Ukraine aid.

2. REMOVING A STAIN ON HISTORY

The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., is sporting a new set of stained glass windows that portray a march for racial justice. They replace a scene that previously honored Confederate Gens. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. Artist Kerry James Marshall charged only $18.65 for his design contribution, a wholly symbolic gesture honoring the year slavery was finally abolished by the 13th Amendment.

3. CHEF ANDRE & PTSD

Chef Andre Rush cooked up culinary delights for top military advisers and even the White House, but he's stepping out from behind the stove this month to support his fellow servicemembers and veterans who suffer from PTSD. Rush spoke to us about National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and helping to protect the Americans who protect us.

4. CANINES AT YOUR SERVICE

Service dogs are also in the spotlight this month during National Dog Service Month. If you're not totally clear on the difference between service dogs and therapy dogs, check out our expert but easy-to-understand explanation from Jerry the service dog and his professional human.

Jerry, a medium sized brown dog, lays at his human's feet. He's wearing a vest that says ''Service Dog. Do not pet.''

5. TOYS YOU DON'T MIND PAYING FOR

Prices for everything may be on the rise, but the kids in your life don't understand that. They still want to play hard (as well they should) so we went to find some options that won't break the bank.

Break out Monopoly — time to teach the kids about investing.

6. BE KIND: THE BOOK

Parents sometimes feel as though they're speaking to a brick wall when they try to get simple life messages through to their children. Just be yourself! Be kind to others! This isn't hard, but one dad decided to try a different way to get through to his daughter.

7. IN MEMORIAM: DAVID McCALLUM

From TV’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in the 1960s and to the popular NCIS series 40 years later, David McCallum stayed busy on the small screen while appearing in several movies in between. McCallum died Monday of natural causes. He was 90.

8. ICY GOODNESS

After a long day you might look forward to a nice, warm bath, but there's still a time and place for an ice bath. After a good workout, a freezing dip can help your body recover. TBH: Our host Shannon LaNier may not have sold it so well, but watch the clip and try to listen to the explanation over his screams. (Thank you for your dedication, Shannon!)

10. BEAUTIFUL BRUSSELS

Generations of children have moaned and groaned when their parents put Brussels sprouts on their plates, but no more! Now that we're grown, we know the right ways to cook them and now we're thrilled when we see them on the plate. Chef Eric LeVine took a few minutes to show us how to turn those little green bulbs into culinary delights.

   ATTENTION TO DETAILS

A savvy teen in New Jersey isn't afraid to put in a little elbow grease. The 13-year-old started his own car detailing business during the Covid-19 pandemic to keep busy and find a way to interact with people. It was a success and you can see why as he tries to detail our sister station's news van.
