1. SURPRISE TRUMP CHARGES

Former President Donald Trump was hit with new federal charges Thursday, but not the ones people were expecting. Instead of being indicted on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election, which are still expected soon, Trump was charged with obstructing justice and willfully retaining classified documents in the case centering on the trove of papers at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The updated grand jury indictment alleges that Trump asked a staffer to delete camera footage to obstruct investigators.

2. (OTHER) INDICTMENT WATCH

We were surprised by the updated Florida indictment because Trump's lawyers had met with prosecutors in the separate federal case of his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The meeting with special counsel Jack Smith's team signaled that an indictment would come soon in that case.

3. TOO DAMN HOT

President Joe Biden announced measures to protect workers from extreme heat, including more inspections of construction sites, farms and other high-risk workplaces and more enforcement of heat safety violations. The administration has also been developing a new rule for employers to give workers water breaks, rest breaks and medical services as well as training for how to spot heat-related illness.

4. SOFT LANDING?

The U.S. economy's surprising acceleration in the second quarter makes some analysts hopeful that the Federal Reserve's interest rate increases will keep slowing inflation without sending the economy into recession. Economists have speculated that rate hikes have spared enough industries that the overall economy is fine and that layoffs have affected mostly better-paid workers.

Fingers crossed for a soft landing.

5. MSU LAWSUIT

Women sexually abused by former USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar are suing Michigan State University for refusing to give investigators documents and emails that they believe show how MSU protected Nassar, who is serving a 40- to 175-year sentence for sexually assaulting female gymnasts. The university says the materials are protected by attorney-client privilege.

The Supreme Court allowed construction to resume on a natural-gas pipeline while an appeals court hears a challenge on environmental grounds. The 300-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline would bring natural gas from Ohio and Pennsylvania through the two Virginias to the South and Mid-Atlantic.

8. FOREST BATHING

You can't go wrong with a nature walk, but this mindful ritual can help make your next arboreal venture extra rejuvenating.

WHAT TO STREAM

This weekend we recommend Steve Carrell in the unfamiliar terrain of psychodrama, a rewatch or first watch of Sharknado β€” which we're pleased to report is delightfully terrible 10 years on β€” and a drama going behind the scenes of one of the biggest fads in the last century (Beanie Babies!). And this week, we're partnering with The NewsWorthy. If you love Need2Know's news bites, this might be right up your alley, so check out today's episode!
