The Title 42 asylum restriction that expelled migrants millions of times along the U.S.-Mexico border has ended, threatening to put an even bigger strain on America’s beleaguered immigration system. Others had raced to enter the United States before new restrictions set in. Some asylum-seekers still waded into the Rio Grande even as officials shouted for them to turn back.

The subway rider who put a fatal chokehold on an agitated fellow passenger in New York is expected to turn himself in to authorities today on a manslaughter charge that could send him to prison for 15 years. Manhattan prosecutors announced they would charge Marine Corps veteran Daniel Penny, 24, in the May 1 death of Jordan Neely, 30. |
The U.S. labor market might finally be getting some slack, as weekly unemployment claims last week jumped to their highest levels since November 2021. However, it could take more than one data point to signal that jobs are no longer plentiful. The most recent federal labor report showed employers adding a whopping 253,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate hitting 3.4%.

Parents of children with peanut allergies could soon have an innovative solution: a wearable "peanut patch." A late-stage trial involving 200 children between ages of 1 and 3 showed that wearing the patch for 22 hours a day over a year drastically increased their tolerance of peanut protein. If approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the product from biopharmaceutical company DBV Technologies would be the first such patch for children under 4 years of age.

It's official: After decades of fighting, the FDA says gay men in monogamous relationships are welcome to donate blood. In the 1980s, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, the FDA instituted a full lifetime ban for gay men. In 2015 the rule was relaxed but required men who sleep with men to abstain before donating. Starting yesterday, all donors, regardless of who they have sex with (or don't) will be screened for risky behavior before giving blood and may be temporarily denied based on their answers.

The breakup between Adidas and the rapper formerly known as Kanye West continues. The sneaker brand now says it might sell its remaining Yeezy products and donate the profits to charities that support people who “were hurt” by West’s antisemitic comments. CEO Bjorn Gulden floated the idea after saying "burning is not an option." The company also warned in February that writing off all that inventory would lead to its biggest operating loss in decades.

In another setback for the embattled fitness brand, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for more than 2 million Peloton workout bikes. The agency said the bikes' seat posts are breaking during use, causing users to fall and in at least 13 cases to get injured, including one report of a fractured wrist. In 2021, the brand recalled its treadmill after a defect caused multiple injuries and one death. Peloton's stock plunged following the news.
